CHARLOTTE - May 15, 2014 - UNC Charlotte Chancellor Philip L. Dubois and his wife Lisa Lewis Dubois are the inaugural recipients of the WINGS Founder’s Award given by Charlotte’s Women Executives (WE).

WINGS stands for the Women Initiating and Nurturing Growth through Scholarship program; the Chancellor and his wife were recognized for “their visionary leadership in the development of the first WINGS scholarship and ongoing support of the WINGS program.”

The WINGS scholarship program supports female college students age 25 and older who are pursuing a degree at Johnson C. Smith University, Queens University of Charlotte, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and Central Piedmont Community College.  In addition to receiving funds to support their studies until graduation from college, WINGS scholars are also assigned a volunteer mentor from the Women Executives organization. The WE mentors help the scholars establish a clear vision and plan of their educational and career goals, as well as maintaining their GPA and course credits. WE mentors work with scholars to provide coaching, friendship and support throughout their college experience and beyond.

Cindy Quinlan, board chair of Women Executives for Community Service and the WINGS scholarship program, said, “It is through the leadership and on-going support of visionaries like Phil and Lisa that WINGS and Women Executives have been able to continue to grow our scholarship and make such an impressive difference in so many lives.  We are pleased to give this inaugural award to honor our partnership with the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.”

The first WINGS scholarship was awarded in 1995 through the UNC Charlotte Office of Adult and Evening Students. Then-Provost Philip Dubois and a group of visionary Women Executive leaders worked to establish the program as a “meaningful and impactful way to improve the lives of women in the community through education,” according to WE officials.  Since its inception, WINGS has awarded more than 100 scholarships.

The WINGS Scholarship program is the sole philanthropic venture of Charlotte Women Executives and is managed under Women Executives for Community Service, a 501c3 non-profit organization.
