Second Community Day Celebration at UNC Charlotte Center City

UNC Charlotte Center City will hold a second Community Day celebration from noon to 6:30 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 22.

 Billed as an interactive afternoon, the celebration will feature UNC Charlotte alumnus and national poetry slam master Boris Rogers, along with an appearance by Norm the Niner, as well as local DJs, the band Vess, radio station La Raza and cultural and departmental stations.

Center City to Host Lona-Frey Collection

The Lona-Frey Collection, representing 43 works by some of the most important American artists of the 20th century, will open to the public on Saturday, Aug. 4, at UNC Charlotte Center City.

During the next three years, UNC Charlotte Center City will display the collection with 27 pieces exhibited on the second and third floors of the building; the remainder of the collection will be located in elevator lobby areas on upper levels. Recorded tours will be available for smart phones, and guided tours will be available by appointment.

Robinson Hall Mural Celebrates Artistic Rhythm

Visitors to UNC Charlotte’s Robinson Hall for the Performing Arts are greeted with a new mural that “brings color, rhythm and a celebration of performance” to the building, according to officials with the College of Arts + Architecture.

“An Endless Performance” was created by students Nicole Anderson and Missy Mace, who are pursing bachelor’s degrees in fine arts. Maya Godlewska and Susan Brenner, art and art history, served as faculty advisors on the project.

‘Concurrent Rhythms’ Intersects Digital Media and Live Music

The College of Arts+ Architecture will present “Concurrent Rhythms,” a collaboration by three groups dedicated to experimentation and contemporary creative practice - Digital Arts Center, Digital Mob and Fresh Ink.  The multimedia event opens at 6 p.m., Tuesday, May 8, at UNC Charlotte Center City, with a reception by Harvest Moon Grille. The reception, exhibition, artists’ talk and performance are free.

Botanical Gardens to Hold Spring Sale

UNC Charlotte’s Botanical Gardens will hold its annual Spring Plant Sale from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Friday and Saturday, April 20-21, at the McMillan Greenhouse.

According to Paula Gross, assistant director of the gardens, plant lovers can expect a wide selection of native plants and exotic botanicals - wildflowers, trees and shrubs, perennials, carnivorous plants, orchids and indoor plants.

Dance Ensemble Performing Spring Concert Through Sunday

The Department of Dance will hold its spring concert Wednesday, March 28, through Sunday, April 1, in the Belk Theater of the Robinson Hall for the Performing Arts. Shows will be at 8 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday, with a 2 p.m. Sunday matinee.

Anchoring the concert will be three multimedia works from the “Dance.Draw” project, representing the culmination of a three-year digital dance project funded by a CreativeIT grant from the National Science Foundation and created through a partnership between the departments of Dance and Software and Information Technology.
