UNC Charlotte Named a Tree Campus USA

With UNC Charlotte’s campus footprint continuing to grow, the University is taking the steps to ensure one of the its most valued natural resources is being sustained — trees.

Beyond a source of shade, trees help clean the air and add an aesthetically pleasing element to campus. UNC Charlotte’s commitment to effectively manage its tree population has led to it being named a Tree Campus USA by the Arbor Day Foundation.

3,750 Students Expected in Three Commencement Ceremonies, May 8 and 9

Commencement is a crowning achievement for most students’ collegiate journey; it also is a celebratory time for faculty and staff who help provide the enriching campus experience for those students.  Next week, UNC Charlotte will conduct three ceremonies to award degrees to undergraduate, master’s and doctoral students, marking the ceremonial end to another academic year.

Charlotte Venture Challenge Narrows Field to 30 Finalists

On Tuesday, March 31, the Charlotte Venture Challenge (CVC) will showcase 30 finalists selected from more than 110 startups to vie for cash awards and the opportunity to be introduced to investors, corporate executives and the business community.

This year’s CVC is being held in partnership with the Southeast Venture Conference (SVC), which is expected to draw 600-plus investors and Fortune 500 innovation executives. Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple, and Scott Kupor, managing partner of Andreessen Horowitz, are scheduled to speak at the SVC.

TIAA-CREF Lecture to Feature Top-Selling Author Frank Pasquale

UNC Charlotte hosts the Fourth Annual TIAA-CREF Lecture on Thursday evening, March 12, featuring Frank Pasquale, author of the top-selling “The Black Box Society:  The Secret Algorithms that Control Money and Information.”

The 7 p.m. lecture will be preceded by a reception beginning at 6 p.m. and followed by a dessert reception at UNC Charlotte Center City (320 E. Ninth Street, Charlotte 28202.).

MSNBC Melissa Harris-Perry to Address Gender/Race Issues

Wake Forest University professor and MSNBC television host Melissa Harris-Perry will discuss “Mommy, Mammy and the Maid: Race, Class and Women’s Political Power” for UNC Charlotte’s ninth annual Women’s and Gender Studies Speaker Series at 8 p.m., Wednesday, April 1, in the Student Union, Room 340.

The event is co-sponsored by the Women’s & Gender Studies program and the Campus Activities Board.

2015 MLK Celebration to Feature National Urban League President Marc Morial



National Urban League president Marc Morial will give the keynote speech for the University’s celebration of the life, work and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. at 3:30 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 20, in the Cone University Center, McKnight Hall.  

Morial’s free, public talk “Building Bridges Through Civility, Justice and Action” is sponsored by the UNC Charlotte Multicultural Resource Center. A community reception will follow in the Lucas Room.
