Fall 2014 begins, Monday, Aug. 18

Fall semester is an exciting time as a new academic year gets under way at UNC Charlotte. More than 30,000 students, faculty and staff will be on campus engaged in research, scholarly or life-enriching pursuits. This includes an incoming freshman class of about 3,350 and roughly 2,700 transfer students. Total enrollment is expected to exceed 27,000 students.

Urban Institute Director of Research among Latest Class of Friday Fellows

Amy Hawn Nelson, director of research at the UNC Charlotte Urban Institute and director of its Institute for Social Capital, recently was named to the 2014-16 class of William C. Friday Fellows for Human Relations.

The goal of the Friday Fellowship is to cultivate a network of “courageous leaders who connect across differences in identity and ideas to develop new solutions to the complex challenges facing the people and communities of North Carolina through a human relations lens.”

Fifth Class of Levine Scholars Named

Sixteen young leaders from high schools across the United States, including 11 from North Carolina, have been named to the fifth class of UNC Charlotte’s Levine Scholars Program. They will join the University starting with the fall 2014 semester.

The University’s most prestigious merit scholarship is valued at about $105,000 for each in-state student and $155,000 for each out-of-state student. It covers recipients’ cost of all tuition and fees, housing and meals, books, a laptop computer and summer experiences. 

Charlotte Venture Challenge to Conclude with Finals and Conference, May 1

The Charlotte Venture Challenge (CVC) concludes Thursday, May 1, with a finals competition and entrepreneurship conference in the University’s PORTAL Building.

Keynote speakers Manoj George, founding chief financial officer of Red Hat Inc., and Phil Verghis, CEO and co-founder of Klever and an early executive with Akamai Technologies, will discuss “Building a Billion Dollar Startup” at 1 p.m.

UNC Charlotte Appoints Director of Athletics Bands

The UNC Charlotte Department of Music has appointed Jeffrey Miller as the inaugural associate director of bands /director of athletics bands. Miller will join the UNC Charlotte faculty in fall 2014 and will be responsible for directing the 49er Basketball Band, conducting the Symphonic Band, teaching a course in marching band techniques, and planning UNC Charlotte’s new marching band.  He will direct the marching band when it takes the field in fall 2015.
