CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Jan. 10, 2018 - UNC Charlotte Chancellor Philip L. Dubois has named a 10-member search committee to assess the qualifications of candidates to serve as the University’s next Director of Athletics. Current AD Judy Rose recently announced that she will retire on June 30.
Dubois will chair the committee, which is comprised of community partners, current and former student-athletes, members of the UNC Charlotte Athletic Foundation Board, and University faculty and administrators, all of whom have a strong working knowledge of collegiate athletics. The search committee includes:
Philip L. Dubois, Chancellor and Chair. Dubois has presidential-level experience in four Division I intercollegiate athletic conferences at two universities over the past 21 years. He was one of five founding presidents of the Mountain West Conference, currently serves on the Executive Committee of Conference USA, and is now serving his second term on the NCAA Division I Board of Directors. The Director of Athletics reports directly to the Chancellor and serves on the Chancellor’s Cabinet.
Kevin Bailey joined UNC Charlotte as Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs this year. Dr. Bailey was formerly at the University of West Florida where the Department of Athletics reported to him and he was instrumental in the establishment of its football program, which this year played in the National Championship for Division II in just its second year of intercollegiate competition. Bailey’s current responsibilities include oversight of the University’s disciplinary processes that apply to students, including student-athletes.
Bob Brannan, Executive Vice President of Uwharrie Bank, is the current President of the UNC Charlotte Athletic Foundation Board and a UNC Charlotte alumnus, earning his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration in 1984. The Athletic Foundation is the fundraising arm of the Department of Athletics.
John Iamarino, Commissioner of the Southern Conference. Mr. Iamarino has served as Commissioner for the Southern Conference since 2006, with 39 years of total experience in intercollegiate athletics, including prior service with the Sun Belt and Northeast conferences as well as in sports information positions at both Georgetown University and Jacksonville University.
Jeffrey Leak, Professor of English, Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR) to the NCAA, and current Chair of the Chancellor’s Advisory Council on Intercollegiate Athletics. Dr. Leak served as President of the Faculty Council during the 2015-2016 academic year.
Krista Long, Vice President of Sales & Marketing for CalAtlantic Homes, is past president and a current member of the executive committee of the UNC Charlotte Athletic Foundation. Ms. Long will serve as the Chair of the 2018 49er Great Gold Rush Auction. She is a former UNC Charlotte student-athlete in volleyball, graduating in 1990.
Charleata Neal, Human Resources Manager in the Department of Facilities Management at UNC Charlotte. Ms. Neal was a standout guard on the University of Virginia’s women’s basketball team from 1991-1995, helping to lead her team to three ACC Championships and one trip to the Women’s Final Four. After serving as an assistant coach at Georgia Tech and Washington & Lee, she served seven years as the Women’s Basketball Coach at Goucher College in Maryland, earning Capital Athletic Conference Coach of the Year honors in 2003-2004.
Martha Thomas, UNC Charlotte women’s soccer player, is one of the most celebrated student-athletes in UNC Charlotte history. Currently a senior majoring in Exercise Management, Ms. Thomas was named to the All-Conference USA First Team for three years and three times to the All-Conference USA Academic First Team. Ms. Thomas ended her collegiate career as the program’s all-time leader in goals scored, points, shots, and game-winning goals.
Lisa Walker, Professor of Sociology and Associate Dean for Graduation and Advising in the Office of Undergraduate Education, supervises the operation of the Athletic Academic Center. Dr. Walker served as President of the Faculty Council during the 2016-2017 academic year.
Fred Whitfield, President and Chief Operating Officer of the Charlotte Hornets. With law and MBA degrees from NC Central and Campbell University, respectively, he has decades of experience as a player, coach, agent, sports marketer, and basketball operations administrator.

Dubois said he will be hiring a search consultant to assist with the identification and screening of candidates and hopes to conclude a successful selection process by June 30.
