National Public Health Week Forum to Focus on 'A Healthier America'

CHARLOTTE - April 2, 2010 - The public forum “A Healthier America: One Community at a Time” will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 6, in the College of Health and Human Services, Room 380. This event, in celebration of National Public Health Week (April 5-11), will highlight efforts in Mecklenburg and Gaston counties to create healthier communities.

Forum speakers are Cheryl Emanuel, community health administrator for Mecklenburg County, and Robert Spencer, executive director of Gaston Family Health Services. Michael Thompson, assistant professor of public health sciences, will moderate.

The Department of Public Health Sciences in the College of Health and Human Services, along with the Graduate Public Health and the Public Health associations, is cosponsoring this free, public forum.

Admission is free and open to the public.

In addition, the UNC Charlotte Beta Phi Chapter of Delta Omega, the national public health honor scoiety, will hold its inaugural induction ceremony, at 5:30 p.m., Friday, April 9 in room 128 in the College of Health and Human Services.

Honorary inductees are being recognized for their meritorious distinction in the field of public health and will make keynote presentations.  Those being honored are:

  • Colleen Bridger, Health Driector, Gaston County Health Department
  • Michael P. Kennedy, Public Health Education, Grants and Special Projects Coordinator, Mecklenburg County Health Dept.
  • Gerald Pyle, Professor Emeritus, Dept. of Public Health Sciences, UNC Charlotte
